Paul Tourigny


My Dad is the most courageous man with an infinite capacity for positive thoughts and actions. He always has a brilliant smile which lights up the room and brightens up the lives of everyone around him. His clear blue eyes sparkle with love, grace and a never-ending will to live and enjoy life to the fullest. He is our hero!

Paul had a stroke at age 63 about 1 year after his retirement. He had taken up golf and was enjoying his well deserved departure from the daily grind of almost 50 years. One morning he awoke and could not speak. Later at the hospital he and my mom found out that he had had a stroke. There were some complications with medications and they did not give him Cumadin and he had a series of many more strokes. He was rushed to Mass General Hospital in Boston and was admitted to the ICU.

After several weeks in the hospital he moved to an inpatient rehabilitation facility where he underwent rigorous physical, speech and occupational therapies. When he finally arrived home he was unable to use the right side of his body and could not speak.

Dad and Mom lived in what was know as their retirement house for about 1 more year after the stroke. It was a beautiful log home on almost 10 acres of woodlands. Dad loved to putter around and work on many projects that continuously made this, their sanctuary, a more beautiful place. There were many family gatherings and celebrations held here over the previous 16 years. It was a place where family and friends would meet, relax and enjoy the beauty and nature surrounding them.

After a year or so my parents realized that staying at this house was too much work and was a bit isolated and difficult to get to in the harsh winters of New England. They cried about what they had to give up but practical, sensible and level heads prevailed and the
